Just Living Life My insulin regime
I must admit when I was first diagnosed with diabetes I was sure they had made a mistake. I was in total denial which only lasted untill my first shot. I've taken shots every day since. For years I thought I was being punished by God. I didn't want people to know I was diabetic, even though I was taking multiple insulin injections a day. But with those wild mood swings you get, I was glad to be able to explain it all away. Friends were happy I found out what was wrong so I could take care of it, and so was I. Slowly but surely, and with lots of help from my Doctor and encouragement from my fiancee, my bad habits diminished and healthy habits replaced them. I've realized that living with diabetes makes me live a pretty healthy lifestyle, which in turn calmed my fears of long term complications. Knowledge is you best defense. Know what can happen and how to prevent it from happening to you. I try to set a good example for my child so that she may be a better person than I. Healthy eating habits now may prevent her from getting diabetes.

My Helpful diabetic hint:
When dining in restaurants I've stopped taking my shots in the bathroom (they are usually disgusting and full of germs!) I test carefully on my lap, and draw the insulin at the table. When I take my shot I can just push it thru my stockings or even jeans without anyone really even knowing. I have to be prepared for my low sugar attacks, and now that 10 years have past, I usually am well prepared. Although my daughter gives me funny looks when I tear though her snacks and juice boxes.

Morning Insulin of 14 NPH (Humulin)and usually 4 units of the Humulog insulinThe next shot is for dinner and I usually get 6-7 units of Humulog I always test before taking the above insulin shots because of the fast acting Humulog. My next and last shot is before I go to bed and I take 16 units of NPH (Humulin)

Doctors VS. Endocrinologists
Being that I live in a small town, I have a family practitioner who takes care of my health as well as the health of my husband and daughter. When Humulog came out I requested a referral to an endocrinologist. He prescribed the Humulog to me. My doctor just gives me refills now, and I would need another referral to see the endo. again. But what would be the senseof that, I wonder? I mean my Doc can draw blood and give me the same tests right? So, I am on my own with my diabetes. I have at times, when in a confused state, asked my husband how much insulin I should be taking. I do have a sister who is also a diabetic but she is on an insulin pump and it seems pretty different. She lives kind of far and we don't seem to talk much. But other than her, I don't know anyone else who is a diabetic. I would like to make friends with other diabetics. Won't you tell me how you deal with your diabetes? Feel free to drop me an E-mail anytime. I would be happy to write back.
